Some 4th Battalion Historical Details – Timeline

 

After WWI 5th Brigade formed 4th, 20th and 36th Battalions.

  • 3/1923 1st continuous training camp – Liverpool – 10 officers, 980 NCOs and ORS 10 day annual camps continued.
  • 1929 V.E. introduced and reorganisation. 9 BDE with 1st, 4th, 45 BNS (4 BN adopted title 
    and 4th INF B – Australian Rifle Regiment) using Australian Rifle Regiment badge
    with IV superimposed on waratah and motto “For Home and Country”
  • 1930 Australian Rifle Regiment colour laid up at St Annes Strathfield
  • 1931 4BN allied with Welsh Guards
  • 1931 Some units removed from Order of Battle. 4th and 3rd BNs linked – 4/3BN
  • 3/9/39 Part of Battalion called up
  • 10/39 Battalion all called up
  • 12/39 Battalion in positions Narrabeen – Palm Beach
  • 1/10/41 Large drafts of compulsory trainees inducted at Wallgrove Camp
  • 19/3/42 Battalion moved to defence positions at Gateshead, Belmont, Swansea, Redhead
    in Lake Macquarie area – attached to 32 Brigade
  • 31/5/42 (approx) Battalion moved to Greta, rejoined 8 Brigade
  • 4/7/42 Embarked on Westralia to WA, Chidlow Wells less HQ COY sailing on Koolinda
  • 4/8/42 Battalion moved to Gin Gin No.1 camp
  • 1/9/42 Battalion moved to Gin Gin No.2 camp
  • 29/9/42 Battalion moved to Gin Gin No.3 camp
  • 2/11/42 Battalion moved to Redbank camp, Midland Junction
  • 21/11/42 Battalion moved to Geraldton (became 4 Australian Infantry Battalion (AIF)
  • 24/2/43 Battalion moved to Moora / Jurien Bay / Dandaragan
  • 27/7/43 Battalion moved to Mingenew
  • 7/8/43 Battalion moved to Collie (jungle training)
  • 6/9/43 Battalion moved to Mingenew
  • 13/9/43 Battalion moved to Mullewa / Chidlow Wells
  • 22/9/43 Sailed ex Fremantle on Nieuw Amsterdam
  • 26/9/43 Disembarked Melbourne – troop train to Wallgrove and 28 days leave
  • 22/10/43 Unit reassembles
  • 16/11/43 Embarked TSS Canberra for Townsville and Tablelands
  • 7/1/44 Moved to Redlynch Staging Camp
  • 10/1/44 Embarked Van Heutsz
  • 16/1/44 Landed Finschhafen – moving on by barge to Nambariwa
  • 20/1/44 Sio Mission, relieved by 2/17 BN
